Qaradawi slams US proxy war in Somalia Saturday, 28 April 2007 07:18

Doha • Noted Islamic scholar, Dr Yusuf Al Qaradawi (right), yesterday blasted the US and blamed it for pushing the Ethiopian army into Somalia on its behalf. It is a proxy war being waged by the US against Somali nationals, he said in his Friday sermon.
It seems that the Americans have not forgotten their humiliation in Somalia when their forces had entered the country earlier and were killed en masse. So, they are now using Ethiopia to settle scores with Somalia and its people on its behalf.
Anti-Islamic forces all over the world are against the United Islamic Courts in Somalia, he said, but wondered what Arab and Muslim organisations like the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) States were doing in the wake of the ongoing crisis in Somalia.
They are moot spectators to the gory goings-on in Muslim Somalia, said the scholar. He was also bitterly critical of the United Nations and the European Union (EU). They have been maintaining silence on the issue and not saying a word to Ethiopia. This is double standard.
"How a country can be left to do what it wants in the territory of another country. How it can be allowed to invade another country and kill its people," he said of Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian president has the gumption to publicly declare that Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, will be clear of UIC forces within a fortnight, he said. "Look at this!"
"The US has given a power of attorney to Ethiopia to wage a proxy war in Somalia at its behest," he said. Talking of the US again, he said the country is fighting a losing battle in Iraq and this has been acknowledged by none other than the US Congress itself.
