German band to open Katara European Jazz Festival
Germany is set to officially open the fourth annual Katara European Jazz Festival with a performance of German jazz trio FAVO, tomorrow at 7pm. The concert, which is a highlight of Qatar Germany 2017 Year of Culture, is organized by the German Embassy and the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region in cooperation with Katara and support of Qatar Airways.
The festival is organised by Katara in partnership with several European embassies including Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Romania, and Switzerland. Beside the concerts the band will give workshops for young musicians in cooperation with the Qatar Music Academy.
The German Ambassador to Qatar Hans-Udo Muzel considers it a privilege that Germany is opening this year’s Katara European Jazz Festival that has grown to 11 participating states.
“I am extremely grateful to Katara for organising this event with the European embassies. The festival is an excellent example for the scope of cultural diversity in Europe and the intense cooperation between the European states. The public in Qatar has the opportunity to listen to a broad variety of jazz styles from the whole European continent.”
FAVO was founded in 2009 by German saxophonist Volker Schlott and clarinetist Falk Breitkreuz who had been playing together in various ensembles. After touring through East Africa as “FAVO” with the Goethe-Institut in 2010, they have recorded two albums as an ensemble.
In 2013 FAVO was joined by Belgian singer Sander de Winne and they played small stages and festivals in Germany. In 2015 Volker Schlott and Falk Breitkreuz started working on their first album with Sander De Winne which they performed during its release tour in Germany and Belgium in 2016.
For their concert tomorrow, they will perform their own compositions as well as adaptations of A. Piazolla,
